ABOUT THE BOOK :  This book explores the making of Tarakeswar as one of eastern India’s most influential pilgrimage centres. Focusing on the cult of Lord Taraknath, it reveals how a small shrine grew into a vibrant religious town shaped by monastic authority, popular devotion, and economic exchange. Drawing on rich historical detail, the study traces the dominance of the Dashnami Giri Sannyasis, the interplay of folk practice and Brahminical Saivism, and the profound impact of political protest and legal reform in the modern era.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR : The Author has had a lifelong association with Tarakeswar, where he received his early education before pursuing higher studies at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur Math, and the University of Calcutta. After completing his postgraduate studies, he embarked on an academic career, eventually serving as a full-time lecturer and later retiring as an Associate Professor at his alma mater. Deeply rooted in the cultural and historical milieu of Tarakeswar, he brings to this work the perspective of both a trained historian and a close observer. In retirement, he continues to engage with history and society beyond the boundaries of formal academia.
